Early Settlements in Upper Canada
As we talked about today, it is important to learn about our communities today by studying our past. Our social studies unit will allow us to investigate communities in Upper Canada around 1800. We will learn about First Nation peoples and French settlers, the challenges and benefits of their interactions, and how they built our communities.
Here are the achor charts for our discussions about the challenges facing settlers and First Nations communities. Make sure you click on each image to have a closer look.

Comparing the Past with the Present
Great job with your city maps. Now, let's use what we learned about modern cities to compare with Wendat communites in Upper Canada.
Iroquoian Longhouse - Wendat Housing
Here are some different looks at the housing of the First Nations communities in Upper Canada.
Family Life
Thank you for sharing the roles within your own families, and for working very well to create our mind map of about Wendat family life. This helps us understand the similarities and differences between the past and present. Click the picture to review our ideas from class.
Anishinabe Communities
Why do think the Anishinabe villages were smaller than those of the Wendat? What does the picture below have to do with it?
Just the same?
Can you use the pictures to predict and infer some other differences between the Anishinabe and Wendat? Hint: think about different foods and family roles.

A New Home: Challenges and Help
As we talked about at the beginning of the unit, coming to a new environment can be difficult. Getting help from others can help sometimes, and we can use the pictures below to remember how the pioneers got help from First Nations people in Upper Canada when they arrived.
Pioneer Living: Villages & Homes
Excellent work using the OERB activities to help us learn about how pioneer living was similar and different from our living in a city or urban community today.

Urban & Rural Communities
Fantastic work yesterday! We have a strong understanding of some features of an urban community. Take a look at our brainstorm below.
Our brainstorm above shows that we are on the way to comparing the features of both communities! Let's use the Popplets to check our learning as we move along the unit.
This interactive map will allow us to visualize suburban communities too. The video link below will also help!
