What is Media?
Great discussion today boys and girls! We learned that media is way to communicate with an audience. Whatever the method, media sends messages to people, so it is important to learn about how media works to understand a variety of styles and techniques.
Forms of Media
Here is our mind map of the different forms of media. Click the picture to see a bigger version.
Target Audience
A target audience is the person, or group of people, that the media form is designed to attract.
Look at the posters below and think about the following questions:
Who do you think the target audience is? How do you know?

Eat Your Breakfast!
We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so companies who sell breakfast foods have to find ways to reach different target audiences. One important word to know is marketing. Marketing means finding different ways to get your audience's attention. Let's look at these cereal boxes to think about some marketing techniques.
Key Questions:
Who would this cereal box appeal to?
How do you know?

Let's use this great activity to design our own cereal box. We will also learn how companies use marketing techniques to appeal to target audiences.
Cereal Box Project - Success Criteria
Great work today sharing ideas about marketing techniques for cereal boxes. Here is our success criteria for your own projects:
- My cereal box uses colors that will attract the target audience (remember: red = power; orange = hungry; blue = relaxed; and yellow = happy and energized).
- My cereal box has a character that will appeal to my target audience (remember: superheroes for kids and athletes for boys and girls).
- My cereal box has a name that gets the audience's attention (it's short and easy to remember).
- My cereal box has a short slogan (example: Great Crunchy Taste!)

Marketing Ideas - Online Gimmicks
We have learned that marketing means finding different ways to get the target audience's attention for your product. The characters in your cereal boxes were gimmicks, another important media word we need to learn about. Our focus will now turn to gimmicks that are used on the internet to sell cereal.
The website links below will help us find techniques used for cereal products that we already know, but also other ideas when it comes to online gimmicks.

This cool activity will help us more find more techniques and also build our success criteria for our final project.
Webpage Design Project
Now that you have showed what you know about some of the media gimmicks on cereal boxes, let's get to work on our new learning goal: a webpage for your cereal boxes that uses newer media techniques we've found in our group work.
What we discovered about advergames, videos, contests, and memberships on these sites will help us improve our media literacy.
Our success criteria below will make sure we are on the right track.

Success Criteria:
I know my webpage will be a success because:
- I have used marketing gimmicks from the cereal box on my site page (bright colours, big title, slogan, and character);
- I have a link for membership on my page (Facebook, Twitter, or email sign up);
- I have advergame links on my page (games that connect to the brand);
- I have videos or video links on my page.
