6 + 1 Writing Traits
Girls and boys, part of our writing program applies the 6 + 1 writing traits model. This means we will focus on different traits, or attributes, for strong writing this year.
The 6 + 1 traits are:
Ideas, the main message and supporting details;
Organization, the beginning, middle, and end of the writing piece;
Voice, how you show emotion in your message;
Word Choice, the vocabulary you use to share your message;
Sentence Fluency, the variety and flow of sentences in your writing;
Conventions, grammar, punctuation, and spelling;
Presentation, how the writing actually looks on the page.

Organization
For our organization unit, we are beginning to work with fairy tales, so take a look at this website for a great variety of fairy tales to listen to. This site can help us get ready for our work in reader's theatre too!
Brave Irene by William Steig is a story of courage, which is perfect for our virtue of the month in January. Let's use the organizer below to organize a summary of the story.

Using Transition Words for Organization
Good writer's use transition words to link the beginning, middle, and ending details of their writing. When we retell, using transition words like first, next, then, after, and finally can help us organize the plot details correctly!
Look at the pictures below to help you organize the details in Viola Desmond's story. What transition words would fit with each picture?

Word Choice
Great work discussing word choice and helping us create our learning goals and success criteria. Don't forget to use this information to check your rough and good copy. Part of our success criteria is using a thesaurus, so here is one for us to use. We also have a dictionary in case we need to look up some words. Just click the icons below.
Word Choice Grammar: Adverbs
To help us make our writing come alive, we can also use adverbs to create stronger verbs. Adverbs are used to describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Take a look at the video below.
Express Yourself: Poetry
Our poetry unit will give us a chance to express our thoughts and feelings in writing. We will also use this topic to help prepare for a school event. There are many different types of poems, so let's take a closer look at these:
